Neal didn't have much hope in this new foster home at first. He assumed it was going to be like all of the others, somewhere where he just blended into the crowd, and, no-one was going to care about him. Exactly like most of the other places since Arendelle, and, all of the places in this world, besides the Darlings.
That was, until he met another resident of this group home, a young girl by the name of Emma Swan. As they got to know each other on his first couple of nights here, he learnt that they were alot alike, especially when it came to how they ended up in the foster system. Abandoned by their parents. And forced to fend for themselves in a world they knew nothing about.
The friendship he had with Emma was enough for him to actually want to stay in this group home for a while. But, who knew how long it would last this time. If the past was anything to go on, then something would come along to ruin something that actually gave him some kind of joy. Neal had noticed that Emma didn't seem to be at the dinner table that night, so, Neal managed to sneak away some spare food into a napkin as he sat with the other kids at the table. As soon as they were excused from the table, Neal went to Emma's room to take her something to eat.
Most people in the home gave him a hard time for being best friends with a girl, but, he didn't care. She had actually treated him as a person, and, not just an add-on to their home. Reaching Emma's door, Neal gently knocked on it, before pushing it open. "Hey Emma. Can I come in?" Neal asked smiling softly at her.

Every day at the foster home was another challenge. And each day it felt as if that challenge was growing harder to survive. A life at a foster home wasn’t easy. Most of the times there were only two rules that counted. Be quick or have nothing, bully or get bullied. Both of those rules sound pretty cruel, but they were definitely being used a lot around the house, or at least between all of the kids that lived there. Emma had been lucky to be able to have a single room. One that she didn’t had to share with someone else at the foster house. Of course this privilege had led to a lot of arguments and hateful looks between her and the rest of the children. It wasn’t Emma’s fault to have the chance to have a whole room to herself. It was the choice of the people who ran this place to put her in there. Certainly the boys at the foster house didn’t had any problem with bullying Emma. They took stuff out of her room only to give it back to her when it was completely destroyed. Making fun of the clothes she was wearing became a daily routine together with hurtful words about her parents that had abandoned her. Every time that others talked about her parents, it made her extremely mad. There was a part of her that wanted to stand up for them, defend them for what they did, even though she knew they’d probably didn’t want her and therefor left her at the side of the road. Only this time it led to a fight between her and one of the boys. One that resulted with her needing to stay in her room and going to bed without food. The boy she’d fought with knew way too well how to act upon the victim role… A tear rolled down the little girl’s cheek. Once more her parents had gotten her into trouble, only this time they didn’t know about it themselves. A gentle knock on the other side of the door made Emma look up from the only thing she had left of her parents. Her baby blanket. Quickly Emma wiped away the tears from her cheek when she heard that it was Neal. “yeah, come in.” she gave him a small smile in return. “I don’t think it’s a good idea that you are in here now Neal. The others are probably going to bully you again when you get out.” Neal Cassidy

Neal knew the rules at the foster homes pretty well. Be quick and bully. Or miss out, and, get bullied. He knew that, if his papa was finding out what he'd been through, then none of them would bully him ever again. But, at the same time, his papa would have to care about and want him for that to even come up.
He hated his room-mate, because he never really gave him room in there. Neal didn't really argue with that part, as long as there was somewhere for him to sleep then he didn't really care. Neal's room-mate gave him a hard time when he awoke from the nightmares of his past, especially when he called out for his papa.
Neal didn't really have much of a place here, and, he knew it. He would run away, but, he knew he had to stay for Emma. To help make her realise she had a friend in this world, and, not all of the boys in this home were jerks. If he wasn't here, then the boys would do a lot worse to her then they already did.
A small smile grew on Neal's face as Emma said he could come in, “Thanks Emma.” Neal said, making his way inside her room. Neal knew that the blanket there of Emma's was the only thing she had of her parents. It was the same with him and the crystal he wore around his neck. That was all he had left of his papa.
At Emma's words, Neal shook his head and, looked around the room “Screw them. I can handle it. I just wanted to make sure you were ok.” Neal smiled softly at her “Besides, they're going to give me a hard time whether I stopped in here or not.”

Emma knew that the others didn’t approve of Neal being able to get along with her. Not only because she was the ‘lucky’ one to have a room for her own, but the fact that she was a girl didn’t exactly help in the matter. “Okay, just make sure that they won’t start pushing you again. It’s not worth it to get into a fight again with them.” The little blonde gave him a concerned look while a small smile appeared. “I’m alright…” her eyes wandered to the ground while she spoke. “… they were talking about my parents and I wanted them to stop. They didn’t listen so I raised my voice…. Which wasn’t a very good idea. I had to go to my room.” Slowly her eyes looked back up to meet the ones from Neal. He was the only one into the entire orphanage that she felt she could trust. He was her only friend and ally. If it wouldn’t have been for him she would have ran away a long time ago. Away from the rest of the kids that made fun of her every moment they had the chance, away from the people who worked there and decided what was wrong or right in your own place and away from having the feeling that you people never wanted you. “How was dinner? I’m sorry that I wasn’t there. I wasn’t allowed to get out of my room.”Neal Cassidy

The other kids in this home disapproved of his friendship with Emma, but, he didn't care. Neal hardly managed to have any friends since landing back here in the Land Without Magic, so, he wasn't going to let anyone stop him from hanging out with Emma. Whether she was a girl or not was ir-relevant to him.
“It's ok. If they didn't push me, or give me a hard time about this. They'll find something else to start a fight with me over.” Neal said, glad to see the concerned look on Emma's face, and, returned her smile.
“Are you sure?” Neal made his way towards Emma at the bed, and, stopped standing just in front of it. “Yeah, I overheard parts of it. I'm the same way with my father. I literally watched him abandon me, but, I would defend him too. I would've helped, and, stepped in, but, two of the boys made sure I was distracted. But, hey, at least you went to your room for standing up for yourself.” Neal let out a soft sigh as he kept his hands in the pocket of his hoodie.
Emma was the only person who Neal felt a trust with here in this foster home. A connection to her, that no-one else would understand. She was his best and only friend, no matter what the other boys here thought.
Neal would've run away from this foster home, but, he couldn't leave Emma here on her own to be picked on by the other boys. He could just take Emma with him, but, that would get both of them in trouble. Neal didn't care so much about getting himself in trouble, but, he didn't want to be the one getting Emma punished. Neal was tired of being told what to do, and, what not to do. But, he really didn't have a choice. Neal didn't feel wanted here, but, he couldn't bring himself to leave Emma.
“Dinner was good. Nothing new with choices though. It's ok don't be sorry, it was hard to make sure I got some of the food though. The food kept getting taken off of my plate by the other boys there. I know you were stuck here, so, that's why I brought you this.” Neal said, smiling softly and pulling something out of his hoodie pockets, holding it out to Emma.

“mhm” Emma gave Neal a tiny nod to confirm that she was being honest when she told him she was doing alright. She’d been worse. The boys at the foster home could use the most hurtful combination of words if they wanted to, but for some reason they hold themselves back this time from giving Emma the fault of her own parents abandoning her. If she would ever get the chance to see them again, she already had one burning question she would ask them. One where she kept wondering about the moment she understood that she was alone on this world, without anyone to keep her safe or to make her feel special. Why? Why did they left her at the side of the road? Her thoughts slightly bent more to a possible answer to that question but it was Neal who reached out a piece of meatloaf that brought her attention back onto her friend. “wow, you managed to get me some meatloaf pie? How did you do that?” Emma reached out for the piece of pie, quickly taking a huge bite from it. “Who did you kill for this?” her mouth was filled with food while her next question came out of her mouth, causing it to sound rather muffled. The taste of that pie was great, even better than she would have thought. Maybe that’s because she could eat it without needing to push some of the boys away this time. Neal Cassidy

Neal returned Emma's nod, and, added a smile to it. He knew the two of them had both been in worse situations then this foster home. The boys here gave Neal a hard time no matter what the situation became. Most of it was to do with the fact that his own father hadn't wanted him. He was just glad that tonight was different, and, he hadn't had to cause a fight of his own.
Neal knew that if he ever actually managed to see his father again, that he would have a lot of questions for him. One of the first ones reflecting on the fact that since that moment, he had rarely felt special or wanted. Why wasn't he good enough? And why didn't he choose him?
He decided to not let himself think about that, and, instead focus on why he'd come to see Emma, well, one of the main reasons anyway. “Yeah, I did. People get distracted surprisingly easily at the table.” Neal said, smiling softly at her as she took the pie from him. “That's more a need to know basis information on that.” Neal just made his way next to Emma on the bed and sat down, as she went to take a bite of the pie he'd brought her. He couldn't remember the last time he'd had food just for him without anyone taking it from him, or risk of it. Neal smiled softly, and, pulled out something else from his pocket and starting to eat it.

The taste of that pie was heavenly, together with the smell of it, it easily became one of the highpoints of the day. Emma couldn’t help but to feel as if Neal was the one who looked out for her, who cared about her like a big brother would do. “Neal, what if we are not meant to stay in here?” her attention focused onto the boy who sat next to her on the bed. “what if we would be better off with just the two of us and away from this place. We can get only the food that we like to eat, we never have to eat quickly because all that we have will just be for the two of us. We won’t get bullied.” Her voice became more and more excited the more she started to think about this possibility. The two of them could be like the most perfect duo to work together and to get what they wanted. Emma placed the rest of the meatloaf pie onto the wooden nightstand that stood next to her bed and shuffled closer towards Neal. “We can run away together.” A huge smile spread on her face but she didn’t wait to get any form of reaction from her best friend. Instead she jumped off the bed and reached out for a backpack that she hid underneath the bed. “I already have a bag if you want. We can fill it with all the things that we need to run away and then we can make our way out of here. We can pack sweaters and scarfs and some little things to eat. A blanket for when we get cold.” Neal Cassidy

Neal knew how good pie could taste, when it wasn’t tainted by foster siblings or having to rush in order to eat it, without getting to enjoy it properly. Looking at Emma, Neal felt like he had a little sister again. And he would protect her, just like he had looked out for Wendy, Elsa and Anna all those years ago.
“What do you mean?” Neal asked, raising his eyebrows in slight confusion. “Just the two of us having whatever we want, that’s pretty much a fool’s dream here.” Neal smiled at Emma. The idea of being away from this place, with the only person left to possibly care about him. The two of them could be a great duo, working together to get what they want.
“Are you serious?” Neal asked, smiling softly at Emma. He chuckled softly as Emma had seemed to already jump up without waiting for an answer. Neal watched as Emma pulled out a backpack from under her bed. “You seem pretty prepared for this. But, I agree with you. Let’s just say I’ve had my own backpack prepared for a while. You know what, let’s do it. Although, we should wait until my roommates asleep, otherwise we will be caught.” Neal said, smiling softly before stepping off of the bed.
