The news had spread of the upcoming ball at Snow and Charming's palace, another ball that everyone in the kingdoms was excited about. Baelfire wasn't a royal, and didn't care much about the balls, but, there was one main thing that kept him going to them. And that was Snow and Charming's daughter Emma. Baelfire knew that his papa hated him spending time with her, since he had a problem with the Charming's that he didn't quite understand the extent of. Of course, that didn't surprise him, since his papa had a history with most people. Mostly bad. But, Bae knew that Emma was one of his closest friends, and his papa couldn't stop him from hanging out with her. He had decided to take a walk around the Forest while getting some fresh air, and also giving him something to do until his clients turned up for the day. Grabbing his bow and arrows from his shelf in the room of the castle he shared with his father, he adjusted his shawl and made his way outside. As expected, people still weren't all that excited when he made his way through the Forest, and avoided him, just like for his whole childhood since he turned 14 and his papa became the Dark One. After reaching the trees not too far from the village, Bae took out his bow and arrows and went to fire it at the target he'd made out of the tree in front of him, letting it go, he noticed that he narrowly missed Emma's head when he did. "Heads up." Bae said, before placing the bow back over his shoulder and walking towards Emma. Emma Swan

Blond hair brought up by several hair pins, bright red lipstick that matches the color of her red ball gown. High heels with a golden shining crocodile centered on the middle of both her feet. A lot of girls she knew would be smiling brightly at themselves while looking at their own reflection in the mirror that stood in their room. But not Emma. She was a princess, a title she knew she had to cherish and live up to. But it was a title that kept her from being her true self. A girl that didn’t care about ball gowns and fitting high heels. All she could do when she stood in front of the mirror inside her room, was lowering her gaze and turning herself around, facing the side of the room that didn’t gave a reflection of the person she didn’t want to be. Another ball was coming up and would be starting in a few hours. Another evening where she would be ending up dancing with a guy she doesn’t even like and used way too much perfumed oil to smell good. Only this time she knew how she had to escape from the tensed moment right before it would start. She knew how to get out of the castle unseen to go to the one person in her life that seemed to understand her and didn’t care about her title. Neal. He was her best friend from when they were at the age of 9. A friendship where neither her parents nor his father approved of, but one that kept existing no matter the negative comments. Emma got out of the castle just as planned. Unseen and running towards the edge of forest nearby, lifting her ball gown up so she was able to get some speed. Only now it came to her attention that the forest wasn’t exactly the best place to move through while you were wearing a ball gown. The moment this thought ran through her mind an arrow planted itself into the bark of the tree next to her, making her eyes widen and her gaze going up into the direction where it came from. It was then that she saw Neal. “What the hell are you doing?! You could have hit me!” Emma said with raised voice before doing effort to move closer towards him while wearing the ball gown. Bae smiled as he heard that call from Emma, before responding “Hey, I gave you warning.” Bae said, glancing at the tree and pulling out the arrow. “Now looking back, it could've been better to probably do it before I fired though huh?” Placing the arrow in his quiver, Bae looked closer at his best friend standing next to the tree he'd just fired at. He looked around, hoping that Emma's guards weren't there, since that could lead to more trouble for both of them. Bae knew that Emma must've snuck out, just to see him. Well, he couldn't say he could blame her. In just a few short hours, she'd be forced in another one of those balls that she hated, even if she pretended like she didn't. Bae just knew Emma that well. Like him, she was not a fan of what she was forced to be, just because of who her family is. Emma was one of the few that actually stuck around in his life after his papa became the Dark One. This was why he was still determined to hang out with her, even if the parents didn't approve of it. They might as well hang around people they want to, besides based on how Emma's parents felt about the friendship between them, and him in general, he probably wouldn't be the most welcome guest there to keep Emma company. And his papa would probably try and stop him because he wasn't the Charming's biggest fan either. Coming out of his thoughts, he adjusted his shawl and smiled softly at Emma. “So, based on your attire, I'm guessing your parents are making you try on your gown early again.” Bae said, chuckling slightly. “Are you serious?” Emma said while studying his gaze. “A heads up by using actual words would have been way less surprising you know.” Emma let out a sigh when he mentioned her parents expecting her to wear the gown in advance already to get used to the weight of the different layers and the size. “Yes, there is this ball coming up, one that will have to happen to make arrangements with other kingdoms or something.” Emma’s hands took a hold of the top layer of fabric that was forming her gown. Shaking around with it a little bit before she brought her gaze back up to Neal. “And by the looks of you, you weren’t exactly planning on coming?” Emma knew pretty damn well that it wasn’t allowed to invite Neal to those balls at the castle as he wasn’t a royal, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t invite her best friend. Maybe he was indeed not a royal and his father is the dark one, but that doesn’t mean that Neal was capable on such cruel acts like his father. “Just know that if you must be planning on sneaking in through the kitchen again, that father probably has guards positioned there. I would go for another way to get in this time.” Emma started to laugh. She just knew that Neal would find a way. Neal Cassidy

Bae smiled innocently at her question, and then shrugged "I know, but, it's not like I knew you were going to be there. Besides you know me, if I wanted to hit someone I would've." Bae said, before looking down at her as he heard that sigh. "Yeah, I did hear something about that. Why do you need one of those to do that? It can't be that hard to just find them in person to deal with whatever arrangements need to be made." Bae said. There were some things he may never understand completely. He found himself staring at Emma's hands fiddling with her gown, before looking back up and adjusting his own shawl so that it sat comfortably on his shoulders. Shrugging softly at Emma's question he sighed softly "You know me, it's not really my scene." Bae said, looking at Emma, a light smile on his face. It wasn't like he'd be welcome there anyway. Her parents didn't like him, and they definitely didn't like his father. The only reason he actually went to them was for Emma, to keep her company at the balls. "I'm sure I'll figure something out." Bae said, before glancing towards the direction of the castle he lived in with his father "Well, the first step would be sneaking out of our castle, so that my father doesn't catch me anyway." Bae sighed softly before turning back to Emma. "I think there's some things in my father's castle that can help me sneak in properly anyway. Besides if I don't, then who else is going to save you from being stuck with some stuffy, stuck-up heirs all night." Bae returned Emma's chuckle, as he smiled at her. Emma Swan

Emma shrugged when Bae asked her why there were even balls needed for things like that. “I don’t know. I’ve never seen it happen in a different way so I guess it’s just the way things need to go?” Emma knew that Rumplestiltskin never invited anyone inside his castle unless it was someone who wanted to make a deal with him. Those people who dared to appear there without a reason weren’t able to talk about afterwards as the magic he’d use on them wouldn’t allow it. Emma knew how much it hurt Bae to see his father being like that. But she didn’t had the power to change anything, she could only make Bae forget about how his life was as the son of the Dark One. The eyes of the princess filled themselves with worry when Bae mentioned he’d had to make sure to find a way to get out of his own castle unnoticed before he would be able to make it to hers. “Just be careful Bae. This ball is not worth it for getting punished by your father for wanting to sneak out. You know that I can always meet you some other time.” Emma would love it to just stay there at the woods longer, spending time with Bae, but the time was slowly running out as the start of the ball came closer. “Maybe… maybe I just have to go to your father and ask for permission on you to come to the ball myself? I’m sure that I can make it back to the ball in time if your father will agree to it right away.” Emma gave Bae a doubtful look. She knew that he wanted her to stay away from his father as far as possible, but the chance on Rumple hurting the princess was way less than the chance on Bae getting punished for getting caught on sneaking out. Looking at Emma he tilted his head at her shrug. "Well, just because you've never seen it, doesn't mean it has to be done this way." Bae said. He knew that the way his papa dealt with people was, they either summoned him or they were invited to the castle. Bae felt sorry for the people who showed up there with no real reason. His papa told him never to speak of it, but, he wouldn't want to anyway. There were some things he could never unsee. Bae hated seeing his papa like that, and always had since he was 14. It wasn't like he could do anything about it, well, he had come close once, but, he had had lost the bean he had gotten from the Rhelm Ghorm. Now, he was still stuck here as the Dark One's son, and his papa was proven right about there being no ways. At least with Emma, he could just be Baelfire, not the Dark One's son. Seeing that look on Emma's face warmed his heart slightly, since it obviously meant she cared about him. "I'm always careful. I know it's not, but, I know that my papa would never really do anything bad to me. I'd like that, but, I think I have it figured out." He would've loved to just hang out with Emma here in the woods, but, he knew she'd have to go back soon. Since the time of the ball was approaching. At her words of going to talk to her father, Bae's eyes widened in worry before he shook his head. "No, no Emma. I've seen what happens to people when they show up in the castle without the purpose of making a deal. Have you ever known my papa to ever agree straight away? You'll be late for the ball, and, I can't deal with the knowledge of that. Plus how will your parents react if you were late because you were with me? Especially if you get hurt." Bae knew that while Emma meant well, he wanted her to stay as far away from his papa as possible. He'd rather get himself hurt for going to see his best friend, then be the one to get his best friend hurt because of him. Emma Swan

“Well I know that he isn’t exactly the type of person that agrees to something right away but I can try to convince him? I mean… he will know who I am and that you know me. I’m not just a stranger who will knock at his huge castle door.” Emma let out a sigh. Bae was way too concerned. “I’m sure that your father is not going to hurt me Bae. He wouldn’t have any reason to do that. I’m just going to ask him if you get permission to come to the ball. It’s not that I’m going to ask your hand in marriage at that door.” Emma couldn’t hold him a chuckle by that thought. Only the idea on how Bae’s father’s face would be looking like by a question like that was enough to make her laugh. “And don’t worry about my parents. I know how I can handle them. Besides, it wouldn’t be the first time that I’m late for a ball. They don’t approve of it but the excuse on having effort with getting my corset right is enough to make them believe I’m speaking the truth. Do you know how much effort it takes to get that bloody thing on? It’s horrible.” Emma tried to lighten up the mood that she’d created upon her friend, but her mind kept itself settled upon the idea on going to his father to ask for permission. Neal Cassidy

“We both know that. Maybe you could try, but, I don't know what good it will do. Yeah, he does know you, but, he doesn't approve of it though, you know that. The daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming a stranger? No way. Just because you're not a stranger doesn't mean he'll listen.” Bae couldn't help, but, be concerned. He knew what his father was, and, that was why. “You may think he doesn't, but, he'll find a reason. Yeah, I know, but, with the relationship he has with your parents may make things harder. Well, I'm glad you're not asking for that. It definitely wouldn't end well in that sense.” Bae let out a soft chuckle at Emma's confirmation of that. And also at the image of the look on his father's face if that was why she was at their castle door. “Oh I know that, and, I'm pretty sure it may have been my fault for the other reasons too. Our excuses that work between our parents are very different then. Can't say I know, but, I can imagine it. You know how to handle your parents, just like I know how to handle my father. Which is why I should be around when you talk to my father.” The image of Emma in the corset made him smile, but, he knew that she was determined to talk to his father, she was just as stubborn as him and his father when it came to certain things. Emma let out a sigh as it was quite clear to her that Bae wasn’t going to let her go alone to his father. The blonde knew about the reputation of her best friend’s father, just like she knew about all the horrible actions he did to achieve his part of a deal. He’d ruined lots of families and lives from people in the kingdom. Emma knew as most of the time those people came to her parents for help or support. Every time that the subject came back onto the dark one, her parents made the blond leave the room and go elsewhere into the castle as the stories could be quite horrible. “Wait a minute..” Emma said as all of a sudden an entirely different idea formed in her mind. “What if you just accompany me at the ball with some kind of mask? I mean… why not? Others will be having a mask as well, definitely the guys around there. No one will know that you are the dark one’s son and all of the other guys will be leaving me alone when I have you by my side. My parents won’t notice it and we can have fun. What do you think?” Emma’s eyes widened and her voice became quite excited. “Nothing can happen.” Neal Cassidy
