Both her and Neal had found themselves a free place to sleep in one of the motel rooms somewhere at the edge of Portland. The more time they spent with each other, the more Emma felt secure and loved. Two feelings she didn’t had the chance to experience for a very long time and finally found back. Night had fallen a few hours ago and the both of them were sharing a bed with an almost worn out matrass underneath them and a bottom that creaks every time you dared to move. City lights were shining through the window of the room that seemingly needed a cleaning up. Emma turned onto her side, facing the wall as the lights were too bright, pulling some of the covers with her so they almost formed a cocoon around her. A sigh left her mouth before sleep found her once more. Her eyes widened when Neal hit her leg with his foot pretty hard. 3 A.M. that’s what the alarm clock said that was upon the little bedside table. Emma reached her hand to Neal while she was still on her side, facing away from him, slapping his arm to return the hit she got from him with his foot. As there was nothing more as a reaction than mumbling and seemingly endless turnings in the bed, Emma frowned before she turned to face him. The little drops of sweat onto his forehead together with the uncontrolled turnings, made it clear to Emma that there was something wrong. She brought herself into a sitting position and placed both of her hands on his chest, starting to shake him awake. “Neal?! Neal what’s going on?” Neal Cassidy

Neal was glad that he and Emma had managed to find an empty motel room in Portland, where the two of them had decided to sleep for the night. When he was with Emma, Neal felt safe and loved, two things he hadn't felt since the Darlings centuries ago. And he wasn't going to lie, he didn't hate the feeling of it. As the two of them lay in the bed that they were sharing with the almost worn up mattress, and a creaky bottom when someone even made a slight movement. The lights shining through weren't bothering him all that much, he had been sleeping in buildings with bright lights all over for countless years. After glancing over at Emma, lying next to him Neal had started to drift off to sleep. A couple of hours had passed before Neal's head started to fill with the nightmares again. Images of his father's old habits with him being forced to watch him destroy so many innocents, including the man he turned into a snail for accidentally injuring him with his cart. Neal didn't know that he was mumbling and tossing and turning, or that he had also woken up Emma by doing so. He was moaning the way he always did, and he felt the sweat dripping from his face as he panicked. The last dream that had come to his head was the same one he'd been haunted with from the moment he landed in this new world and countless years on Neverland. The moment his papa abandoned him for that dagger all those years ago. 'Where are we going boy, what kind of world is this we're going to, what kind of world is without magic' 'A better one' 'My gosh boy, like a tornado' We have to go through' 'No, no I don't think I can' 'You must it's the only way' 'No, no, no, no, no, no it's a trick, it'll tear us apart' 'It's not. It'll be ok, I promise' 'PAPA! We have to go through. What are you doing papa? It won't stay open long let's go' 'I can't. I can't.' 'Papa please. It's the only way we can be together.' 'No Bae I can't.' 'Papa please' 'I can't.' 'You coward, you promised, you'll break our deal' 'I have to' 'PAPAAAAA!!!!!!'Suddenly he felt himself being shaken awake by someone and he steadied himself in the bed before opening his eyes in one swift movement. "Papa" Neal said softly under his breath as he lay there wiping the sweat off of his forehead. Emma Swan

Relief took over from the worry she’d felt before he had opened his eyes and woke up. The word Neal had spoken out might be one in a whisper, but it was one she recognized to call out herself when she was little. “What’s wrong with your papa Neal?” Emma didn’t want to start telling him that his father was dead, certainly not after this dream he had. A dream which had probably looked very real the moment he was in it. “It’s okay Neal, you’re here in Portland, with me.” Emma kept her hands onto his chest, to help him coming to senses quicker. “You had a nightmare… it seemed best to wake you up. I hope you don’t mind.” Emma said with a worried look on her face. “but by the looks of it, I think you agree with me on that.” A small smile followed when she locked her eyes with his. “Do you want me to get you anything? Some water? Or maybe a towel to dry you off?” little drops of sweat had formed onto his forehead and ran down, the shirt he was wearing looked as if he went under a shower with it. “If you want to fresh yourself up, that’s fine, I’ll be here.”Neal Cassidy

Neal felt his breathing still being heavy as he woke up from his nightmare again. Hearing that distant voice, Neal started to come back into the present. "He's... he's gone" Neal said softly, finally admitting it out loud. Neal knew he wasn't dead, but, he might as well be. As he realised that Emma was next to him, Neal turned to face her and felt his breathing calming down. He placed his hands on top of hers, as she kept her hands on his chest. "I guess I did. Yeah, of course I don't mind." Neal noticed the worried look on Emma's face, before softly nodding. "Yeah, I agree. Thanks" Neal did appreciate someone actually waking him up from his nightmare this time. Returning Emma's smile, Neal looked around and looked down noticing his shirt was soaked, again. Neal shook his head gently, "No I'm fine. I've got you here." Neal said, keeping a light grip on Emma's hands. Neal felt the sweat continuing to drip from his forehead. "I don't need to. But, I do think it'll be a good idea to ditch this shirt though. I don't need to go swimming at 3am." Neal said, as he took off his soaked t-shirt and used it to wipe the sweat off of his forehead. Looking around, Neal glanced down at Emma before looking back at the shirt and then looking back up, "Actually, on second thought. Give me a minute" Neal slowly stood up and kissed Emma's forehead before heading to the bathroom. Emma Swan

The worried look on her face stayed when Neal got out of the bed, heading towards the bathroom with his shirt in his hand. That nightmare must have been quite intense to get him reacting like that to it. He seemed to be pretty off which made Emma concerned. Neal rarely acted like that, doubting his actions that much. Emma sat up in the bed, hearing a lot of muffled sounds coming from behind the bathroom door. “Neal are you okay?” The blonde made her way out of the bed, the coldness of the ground embraced the skin of her feet. She wrapped her arms around her upper body while she adjusted to the cold that appeared the moment she left the bedcovers. With slow steps she walked to the bathroom door, placing her hand on top of the handle while the other gently knocked. “Neal? Can I come in?” Emma hold her ear close to the door so she was able to hear his answer, but it was the curiousness and worry inside of her that didn’t make her wait for that to press the handle down and open the door. “Neal what are you doing?” the same frown she had before appeared once more on her features when she saw him staring into the mirror above the sink. Neal hated that the nightmare was the one thing that could mess with his head that much. His papa still had that effect on him, and he hadn't been around him for over 2 centuries. Making his way to the bathroom, Neal glanced down at the shirt in his hand again. His grip had tightened around it, since the aftermath of the nightmare was still getting out of his system. Closing the door, Neal rested his hands against the edge of the sink. "If you hadn't wanted to go with me, you should have said something before we made that stupid deal." Neal said, softly enough that he hoped Emma wouldn't hear him. Placing the shirt down on the ground, Neal turned on the tap and splashed his face with some water. Turning off the tap, Neal glanced back up at his reflection in the mirror. He saw flashes of his papa's face there next to him, smiling at him. Neal blinked back the tears that were coming to his eyes, and he was relieved when the images disappeared. 'All I want is your happiness Bae. If you find a way I'll do it.''The deal is struck'...'You made a deal with me. Are you backing out?''No'Neal wanted to punch something or scream out in frustration, but, he was certain that would only worry Emma more. Coming back out of his thoughts, Neal heard a knock on the bathroom door, and smiled softly as he heard Emma's voice. Using his shirt, he wiped his face once again with it, and before getting a chance to answer, Neal heard Emma coming in anyway. Leaning against the sink, he looked in the mirror before turning his gaze towards Emma. "It's nothing. Just freshening myself up." Neal said, before noticing the look of worry on Emma's face. "It was just the nightmare I had. It got to me. That's all." Neal said, turning his gaze and body completely towards Emma. Emma Swan

Emma understood that nightmares could feel so real sometimes. Even that real that they could mess up the whole upcoming day. Nightmares had the habit on sticking around in your mind like a dog that was determined to follow you around the whole day to get attention. Neal didn’t had to tell her that his nightmare got to him, she already guessed that by the kicks and turns inside the bed and the soaked shirt he was wearing only a few minutes ago. Emma stepped towards him, gently wrapping her arms around his lower back, placing her lips upon his collarbone before raising her head to look up at him. “It’s not just something if it makes you unable to forget about it” both her thumbs caressed over the skin of his lower back while she looked for his eyes with her own. “Would it help if you talked about it? Cause I’m not planning on leaving this bathroom before I know what is going on inside of that mind of yours.” Emma tried to lighten the mood by giving him her familiar comforting smile. She could only hope that it would work. “Look Neal, I’m here if you want to talk about it okay?” Emma laid her head upon his chest for a few seconds before letting go of him. She knew that if he truly wanted to talk about it, he would follow. Neal Cassidy

Neal knew that Emma didn't need to know how real the nightmare was, in fact it was a nightmare based on a memory. The worst memory of his life. Everytime he relived it, it just brought a pain to his heart that was just as strong as it was the first time it happened. The words, the nightmare got to him was an understatement. Neal's nightmare didn't just get to him, it brought back so many feelings from the foster system and even before that, mainly on Neverland with those countless years of being a lost boy. A smile grew on Neal's face as Emma wrapped her arms around him, and, kissed his collarbone. A feeling inside him grew, as he felt a warmness inside him instead. "It's not something I think I'll be able to forget about anytime." Neal said, feeling his knees weaken slightly as Emma caressed his lower back. "I'm not sure, but, I'm sure it won't make things worse. Well, I guess I don't have much of a choice then." Neal returned Emma's smile that she gave him, knowing she was trying to comfort him. And for the first time in the countless years since he'd been abandoned, he had someone wanting to help him and make him feel better when the nightmare came to his head. Neal nodded as Emma said she was there for him, before resting her head on his chest. Neal looked at her, as she raised her head from his chest before letting out a soft sigh. "The nightmare wasn't a nightmare. It was a memory, a really bad memory."Emma Swan

Neal mentioned his nightmare to be a horrible memory of his that came back to surface and haunt him during the nights. Emma could only guess about what that memory might be. In some way it was concerning as she knew that Neal didn’t had an easy life while growing up. It was quite similar to her own life and that could only mean memories about the foster system or being in trouble. Emma reached one of her hands out to him, taking a hold of his and gently dragging him with her towards the edge of the bath tub. She was not going to leave this room before she knew more about all this. The memory he had must be a painful one to be able to haunt him during the nights so much. The blonde sat down onto the edge of the bath tub, letting out a soft sigh as she looked up to Neal who stood in front of her. “Look Neal, as much as you would like to just ignore this nightmare you had, I think it would be good that you tell me about that memory. Is it something from back at the foster system? Or about you getting in trouble for something you did?” Emma’s eyes showed the concern she felt inside while she looked at him. Neal Cassidy

Neal hated that out of all the memories that came into his head, it was the moment of his papa abandoning him over and over again. Why couldn't it be the Darlings? The actual family that wanted him, instead of him continuously seeing the one that didn't. He knew that Emma knew how rough his life had been growing up, it was a lot like hers had been. Abandoned by parents and forced into the foster system to grow up alone. Glancing down at Emma's hand as it grabbed his, he smiled softly as he didn't resist being dragged over towards the bath-tub. Neal was pretty sure that Emma wasn't going to let this moment go, at least until he had talked about it. In a way it warmed his heart knowing that someone was actually caring about him and the after math of the nightmare. It had haunted him for years, but, he'd been able to hide it in the past, especially since they hadn't cared anyway, they'd always just told him to shut it and go back to sleep. Or to sleep on the couch. Neal looked down at Emma, and, smiled at her as she looked up at him. “You're right I do want to forget about it, but, I don't think that's possible really. Actually it's not really either of those things, at least not the one that woke me up.” Neal sighed softly as he sat down on the bath-tub next to Emma. “The truth is, the nightmare is me re-living the moment that my father abandoned me.” Neal felt his hands being made into fists as he felt the tears coming to his eyes, and he blinked back the tears as he rested his hands on the edge of the bath-tub.
