: One day young Cora, who worked at the tavern decided to have an affair with the supposed Prince Jonathan. It took one night filled with passion and lust for her to conceive a child and that child was Zelena. However, much to Cora’s dismal she found out that Jonathan was no prince – with that she dropped him faster than a hot potato. Due to the fact Cora had conceived Zelena, she could not marry Leopold, which meant that she could not become royalty, which was her biggest dream. So when she gave birth to the baby she placed her into a basket and left her in the woods – leaving her to at the mercy of a cyclone, washing her up to a distant land of Oz. Luckily (or not) for the baby, a couple found her laying in the basket all alone. The mother was enamoured with the baby’s beauty but then… the father noticed something was wrong. The trees moved in accordance to her hands, to her ministrations, and before anything could happen the tree fell. However, the mother insisted on taking the child back home with them. Her childhood was a normal one, or so she believed. Her mother loved her more than anyone else ever had but her father despised her and eventually succumbed to alcoholism. Zelena never understood why her father hated her so much and it was not until one day that her magical abilities have found their way back to the child. She was helping her mother out and her mother needed a cloth, with a swipe in the air the young girl made it appear out of thin air. Her mother, did not oppose her abilities in fact she had decided to try to harness it so Zelena could help around more around the house. Of course, her father did not know about it – after all, he spent most of his days either yelling or at the tavern drinking. As she grew older, she eventually had to work as well. So Zelena took up a job around the tavern, probably one of the places she hated the most but she had no option, it was her father’s will. Eventually even the smell of beer could make her sick to the stomach, but she had to continue. It was not until one day that she came home to only notice her parents fighting. Her father yelling at her mother and even to the point of hitting her. Zelena did not understand why and became infuriated, on impulse her magic ha activated and she pushed her father away from her mother. Her mother looked shocked an almost appalled but then, her father would rise up and beat the woman until she was motionless. Then of course, he would guilt trip the girl who had just returned an he called her Incredibly hurt by his words, Zelena questioned why he would call his own daughter something like that – it was then that she had learned that, she was in fact adopted and her father never wanted her. Suddenly it became clear to her why he was always so cruel to her and it was within that moment she impulsively ran away from home. She went to the Emerald City, in hopes of seeing the Wizard of Oz to find the answers to her troubles. It was then, through the portal that she had seen the moment when Cora left her at the mercy of the cyclone and it had confused her. Then she was shown scenes of her younger sister, Regina. Initially she was thrilled to hear the news but only to be bitter about it because she was not the one that Cora had to give up – because she was royalty and Zelena WASN’T. With that, she asked to go to the Enchanted Forest to see Regina and the Wizard granted her the magic slippers that would allow her to travel through realms.
In Regina’s palace she would then meet Rumplestiltskin, Regina’s mentor who later then became her mentor in magic. For the first time she felt wanted for who she was, for the magic she had – even if her ultimate goal was to just cast a curse for him. For him, she was willing to do anything, no matter how great the sacrifice was. After all, that is the most she could do the repay the man who had made her feel loved the most.
Zelena does develop a deep level of affection for him, she became clingy towards him because he was the one she loved the most. After all, he showed her it was okay to be herself and that her magic was a gift, not a curse. However, as someone who had never been truly loved for who she was she had some troubles with differentiating her feelings for him – eventually, Rumplestiltskin made her believe that she had loved him in a way that she would love a lover. However, by then it was too late and she had started to turn green and consumed by envy. He still taught Regina and it was then that she had attempted her first time at murdering someone – but she failed because it was not Regina, but rather Rumplestiltskin in disguise. With her heart utterly crushed, she returned to Oz with her slippers and demanded the Wizard to bring her back in time but instead she was told that it would never ever be possible. So, she ripped his curtain in a flash of anger to only reveal a man named Walsh. Disgusted by the revelation she looked at Walsh then a flying monkey and inspiration struck her with a wicked grin. It was at that moment that she would become all green, consumed by her insides to only wish to seek out revenge on Regina. However, it was in the midst of her envy that she was discovered by Glinda, the Witch of the South. According to her the seat for the West, which symbolizes innocent has been left empty for a long time and she wishes for Zelena to fill the position. Reluctant, but Zelena decides to give it a chance – seeing how genuine Glinda seemed to be at first. It was then that she joins Glinda, Lacosta, and Evanora on the table – though those days of happiness did not last long until Dorothy Gale would arrive in a cyclone, with a house landing in the land of Oz. Once more, Zelena feels betrayed and replaced by someone much younger and fresher faced than she was. Her envy begins to consume herself once more before she decides to take action – not only against Dorothy but also Glinda. She allows Dorothy to believe that she killed Zelena by pouring a bucket of water on her and giving her Evanora’s silver slippers to return her to Kansas. Later on, she banishes Glinda to the enchanted forest. It was then that she decided she would never, ever trust again. She would sit and wait for the perfect moment to enact her plan to ensure that Regina would never be born.
