Set During the Curse, Between 'Snow Falls' and 'That Still Small Voice' Emma's boots made muffled scuffing sounds as she briskly navigated her way down the hall of the small town hospital. It was nearing the evening as the sun set over Storybrooke Maine. Ideally Emma did not want to spend her Friday night at a hospital, but the newly placed Deputy badge on her hip required sacrifice in the form of personal wants. After a few minutes of convincing Dr. Whale that she had indeed been sent here on official business, the man shoved a tray of food in her hands and pointed her off towards the one of the few single patient areas at the end of the hall. Walking away from the doctor, Emma glanced down at the array of healthy and easily digestible food she was handed. Just one of the many things she hated about hospitals, they forced you to eat healthy all the time. Juggling the tray, Emma struggled to knock on the doorframe to the open room. "Expecting someone else?" she asked, giving the man a knowing half smirk. Unlike her new roommate this was less of social call and more a job tossed on her by Graham. Being the new Deputy had little perks as the Sheriff shelled off jobs while he ran around doing who knows what at night. So far his promise of no late night shifts was falling short. Emma awkwardly shifted on her feet before remembering what she was carrying in her hands. "Oh, um- yeah.. Dr. Whale says it's dinner time..." Emma stepped forward and placed the tray of food down in front of him, unsure if she had to do anything else. This was why she was unfit to be a mother, no maternal instincts what so ever. Shoving her hands into her pockets Emma rocked back on the heels of her feet for a moment as she struggled to find the words to say. The weight of her new badge sat awkwardly on her hip as her eyes were trained anywhere but the man before her. Emma's last job usually had her hunting people down, not babysitting. "There's no more wandering off for you in your future is there?" she asked. This was why Graham had ultimately sent her down to the hospital - a glorified baby sitter for a man who just woke up from being in a coma for years who already made off for the woods once. Emma didn't understand why the hospital couldn't watch over the grown man, but the Sheriff wanted at least one night of surveillance before trusting the John Doe. Well, technically he wasn't a John Doe anymore, he was David Nolan.

David just woke up after he slept the whole day. He was still confused about what happened and tried to remember why he was heading to the woods and especially to that bridge. Then he remembered the moment when Mary Margaret saved him. Since she saved him, he couldn’t stop thinking about her. It’s because of her that he was still breathing. He hoped that she would visit him today, so he could thank her even more. He looked at himself and hated to be in that hospital outfit. He really could use his own clothes for a moment. And the thing in his nose which was giving him some extra oxygen wasn’t pleasant as well.
In the distance he could hear some footsteps approaching the room where he was. He hoped that it was Mary Margaret and got himself sitting up straighter. He watched the entrance carefully, waiting for Mary Margaret to walk in. When he saw a girl with long blond hair walking in instead of one with short black hair he hold in his bright smile and put up a surprised look instead. “oh well, no I just… I was just waking up” he didn’t want to tell Emma that he was indeed expecting someone else. How weird must it sound to expect someone who is not your wife?
“thanks” he looked at the food that was laying on the tray, not feeling like eating at all. He was still a bit too confused to just eat right now. He pushed away the tray gently and looked at the blond haired girl waiting for her to tell him why she was visiting him. “so that is the reason why you are here now, I see” he gave her a small smile “I’m afraid that I can’t tell you anything since my memory is still vague about it too. If I would know why I went there, I would tell you” he let out a sigh “it was like something made me go there, I was drawn to it. I’m sorry, I can’t give you more information.”
He looked at the entrance of the room again for a brief moment as he heard some footstep again, but those stopped at the room next to his. “Will you thank Mary Margaret for me, next time you see her? Tell her that I’m really grateful for what she did, that she saved my life.”

”I’d eat that if I were you,” she advised. Realizing she was coming off a bit harsh she continued with ”Dr. Whale seemed pretty adamant that you received it. You wouldn’t want to get me kicked out would you?” Or maybe he would. It wasn’t too high on Emma’s list to be watched over by a complete stranger. Regardless of what he wanted at the moment, he was stuck with the Deputy. As for Whale, she had enough problems with Regina trying to kick her out of town, she didn’t need another high up citizen on the food chain upset with her. Speaking of the mayor, she was surprised she wasn’t objecting to Emma’s involvement with the ‘John Doe’ case. Her role in the whole matter was still murky in Emma’s opinion. ”Sure,” Emma finally uprooted herself from her spot by the foot of the bed and took a seat in the spare visitor’s chair. It was a bit uncomfortable, but the comfort was meant to be provided for those who were sick, not the visitors. ”In the meantime you’re still stuck with me.” Emma slouched a bit in her seat, unfazed by her company as she desperately tried to find a sweet spot in the chair she would be spending sometime in. When she was certain that the patient wouldn’t bolt again she’d make the rounds and settle on a post outside of his doors. When David went on about being drawn to the forest, Emma ignored it for a moment, more concerned on the solid facts from last night. First Henry had begun to loop her roommate Mary Margaret into this whole ‘curse theory’, Emma didn’t need another fragile mind being swayed by Henry’s childish fantasies. ”So you’re sure you don’t remember anything about last nights venture into the woods Mr. Nolan?” Her eyes narrowed in on him expectantly as she awaited his answer. She just wanted to get a read on how truthful he was being. ”Anything at all could be helpful, even if you think it’s insignificant.” She pulled that line from hundreds of cop shows she had watched in her life. Just because Graham gave her the badge didn’t mean she knew everything on her own about being an effective law enforcer.

“I promise you that I will eat it later, just now I’m not really hungry.” He gave her a small smile. David chuckled “I guess I am indeed stuck with you right now, but I’m sorry I can’t tell you something more than what I just told you. I don’t remember anything. I only remember the moment when Mary Margaret found me and saved me.” He saw the look on Emma’s face when he told her that, and it didn’t looked like it was believe him. “Look, you are probably thinking that I was up to something, but you have to believe me that that isn’t the case. I really don’t know why I did that, I really don’t” oh how he wished that Mary Margaret was here right now. She would believe him immediately. “If I will remember something I will let you know, but for now I’m afraid that I can’t help you.” He let out a frustrated sigh. He wished he could tell her more, but it was a mystery to him as well. He was having the same question all the time, why did he go there, and why didn’t he remember something? He hoped for his memory to get back soon, cause there was nothing more frustrating than not knowing…
Also the woman who says she is his wife is really not familiar to him, he really didn’t remember anything about moments with her and certainly nothing about a dog named Ajax. Ajax, come on, who names their dog like that. He found it really hard to just pretend that he knew something in front of that woman with the name Kathryn. He didn’t want to disappoint her when she brought photos again from both of them and their dog. So he lied to her by telling that he remembered it a little while in fact he wasn’t.
The only thing that felt right at the moment was Mary Margaret. When she was around him, it was feeling like things were normal, like it was right. But Mary Margaret wasn’t here right now to make him feel comfortable, no now there was a deputy of the sheriff with him who seemed not to be trusting him completely.

Emma’s resolve was defeated a bit as David explained how he really didn’t have any idea about last night. He definitely wasn’t lying. Looks like Emma needed to work on her bedside manner. Mary Margaret probably would have given Emma a reproachfully look for how…well… ‘Emma’ she was acted. Of course her roommate would know what to do, but she had more of a cause to be understanding of David Nolan. Emma was far from stupid. They way Mary Margaret went on about David was far from standard procedure for a volunteer and her patient. Even if she wasn’t ready to admit it to herself. ”Sorry, we just need to cover all the bases.”It must have been strange not to remember anything, wake up in an unfamiliar location and go wandering out of into the woods. What she wouldn’t give to forget some of the shadier moments of her life…or most of her childhood for that matter. ”So…” What was going through David’s mind since he couldn’t remember anything? He could still function, probably had muscle memory for the things he did before his accident. But his second life was only a few days fresh now. With only three days of memories there must have been a lot of free time for thinking. God she was sinking and failing at both being a Deputy and a decent hospital visitor. ”I’m sure something will come up sooner or later.” hat sounded like a cheesy line from some movie, but it was the best she could pull out for the stranger. There had to be something to ease the uncomfortable silence between the two. ”What would you do if Mary Margaret was here?” She eyed the deck of cards next to David’s bed and went to reach for them without getting up. Waving the deck in her hands she flashed David a look without really asking. A game was the least they could do to pass the time. Maybe it would get him to open up more about God knows what.

“Yes I understand that you need to do that. It’s part of your job I guess” he decided to give her a friendly smile. What more did she wanted to hear from him? He already told her everything he knew and still she kept on sitting there. He looked out of the window for a moment, wanting to be outside again and not being stuck on machines and wires. The thoughts about being out of the hospital again made room for thoughts about Mary Margaret from the moment Emma mentioned her. “I suppose I would be playing cards with her as well after I thanked her for like a thousand times” He saw Emma taking the deck of cards to play a game and thought that was something he would actually do with Mary Margaret as well if she would be here. Why was she bringing up Mary Margaret again? Would she know that he was feeling himself great when she was around him? No David, of course she wouldn’t, how would she know? You never told anyone. And be glad for that, who knows how Kathryn react to it.
God, stop thinking that much, you are about to play a game of cards now. “what should we go playing?” giving a look at the deck of cards in Emma’s hand while she was starting to dole out the cards. “Maybe you aren’t the right person to ask this too, but do you have any idea how long I have to stay here? Cause to be honest I have had it with hospitals for a while now.” He hoped she could give him an answer, he wasn’t really too keen on asking the same question to Dr. Whale. He didn’t know why but Dr. Whale didn’t look like someone he would trust immediately.
When the pile of cards for him started to grow he began to hold them in some kind of order in his left hand. He coughed a bit, feeling that his lungs weren’t really okay yet after laying in that cold water at the bridge last night. He knew that he had a lung infection or something like that. When he thought about himself he really felt himself miserable. Not remembering anything about his life before the coma, probably having a lung infection, how miserable could one man be?
